Is lavender a harmful furrow-weed?

It sounds incredible when you first hear it, but in Australia lavender has been declared a harmful furrow-weed since 1920!

It appears that, domesticated in the late 1800s Lavandula Stoechas felt so comfortable in Australia, that an eradication campaign had to be fought against it. The biggest problem was the fact, that livestock don’t feed on it, thus on the grazing fields it takes room away from valuable fodder, on top of this it provides protection for harmful wild hares.

Several methods have been tested as defence: if it is uprooted by hand or ploughed over, even the seeds or roots sprout again, and it is fiercely resistant to most herbicides.
